Thoughts on the Current Unemployment Rates

The new unemployment rates came out today and if you listen to the National and Provincial media the outlook is grim. I caution everyone before they close their doors and jump on the doom and gloom bandwagon, that our area appears to be less affected then the rest of the Province, and Canada. We are still experiencing a very tight labour market with labour shortages in many sectors. Our area has the one of the lowest unemployment rates in Canada. The February report shows Alberta’s unemployment rate jump up 1% in Feb from 4.4% to 5.4% however, our area only rose .1% from 3.1% to 3.2%. The rest of the province is feeling the downturn much harder then the east side of the province. Saskatchewan has the lowest unemployment rate of all the provinces at 4.7%.

I would love to hear your perspective of our current labour market and if you agree or disagree with the numbers that came out today March 13, 2009.

  1. I agree with the booming Sask economy the Lloydminster labour shortage is not going to be as severe as the rest of the province
